Views on Successful Hiring
At the recent ATE PI conference in Washington, DC the National Convergence Technology Center (CTC) participated in a panel discussion on the hiring process of students who were successfully hired in their industry. The discussion focused on student mentoring, resume and interview preparation, and the hiring process.
Dr. Ann Beheler facilitated a discussion with Collin College student and newly hired AMX by Harman employee, Chelsea Fitzgerald and the CTC’s BILT chair, Global IT Director for AMX by Harman, Matt Glover, about the hiring process for Chelsea.
Mentoring:
Ann has been mentoring Chelsea for over a year, and in this video, they discuss the mentoring process and how it helped Chelsea stick with networking, and ultimately end up being introduced to Matt.
Interview Prep:
Ann and Chelsea talk about the different ways in which Ann helped Chelsea prepare for the hiring process through resume reviews and mock interviews.
Hiring Process:
Ann and Matt discuss the hiring process for Chelsea, what set her apart from other candidates and what qualities he looks for in new employees.
One last thing I wanted to share was a question from the audience of how teachers, faculty and mentors can help students become excited and engaged and have the passion like Chelsea. As Matt said, it is a difficult thing to teach but made the critical difference. Chelsea noted that for her, seeing the excitement and passion that her professor had, and the encouragement she got from him and her mentor, helped to inspire her, and she, in turn, helped to inspire her fellow classmates. Her takeaway message is that one person can really impact many people by sharing their excitement and passion.
